Preventative Health Management

Crum Equine Veterinary Service provides first rate veterinary care on the farm for routine and emergency needs. Preventive medicine and routine patient care, including vaccinations, deworming, teeth floating, senior exams, Coggin’s tests, and health certificates, are performed regularly. Pre-purchase examinations, lameness evaluations, dermatologic evaluations, and ophthalmic evaluations may also be performed on the farm. Crum Equine is a partner with Pfizer Animal Health by offering the Preventicare Plan for surgical reimbursement should your horse require surgical intervention for colic. We encourage you to visit www.equinepreventicare.com for more information on this program.

Sports Medicine and
Lameness Examinations

Sports medicine is at the heart of Crum Equine Veterinary Service. To keep horses at peak performance, in-depth evaluations are performed at the farm, stable, show grounds or racetrack. Diagnosis is facilitated by digital or standard radiography, ultrasound, and diagnostic blocks. Upper airway examinations are common and are done by endoscopy. Cutting edge therapies include, but are not limited to, joint injections, shockwave therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), IRAP therapy, and mesotherapy. Many of these modalities are discussed later under their own headings. Candidates for major surgical procedures are referred to a referral hospital for surgery.

Pre-Purchase Examinations

Prior to the important investment of purchasing a new horse, a complete pre-purchase examination is recommended. The format can be tailored to your specific needs, but involves at the minimum a thorough physical examination from head to tail, including an ocular and cardiac exam, flexion tests and hoof-tester examination. The horse is observed for soundness, and digital radiographs are encouraged to establish a baseline of skeletal changes. Blood work, reproductive exams, ultrasound exams, and upper airway endoscopy are also among the ancillary procedures available.

Insurance Examinations

These examinations are similar to the pre-purchase exam but are done according to the procedures required by your insurance carrier. Please make sure you have the proper required form on hand from your insurance carrier prior to our visit for this exam.

Minor Surgeries

We perform minor surgeries in the field such as castrations, laceration repair, Caslicks procedures, and biopsy sampling. If more extensive surgery is required, we will refer you to a referral equine surgical hospital.

Dentistry

Equine Dentistry is a very important part of every horse’s routine health maintenance program. Proper dental care allows a horse to process its feed and hay in an efficient way, and has been

shown to play an important role in a horse’s ability to perform well. It is also beneficial in improving the lives and longevity of our geriatric patients. We are committed to providing you and your horses with the very best dental care available.

Annual or even biannual examinations of your horse’s teeth allow us to identify and address problem areas before they cause health issues or impair performance. Horses’ teeth are continually erupting throughout their lives, so the horse’s mouth is always changing. Small imbalances can lead to more significant malocclusions if they are not addressed in a timely fashion.

We use a variety of hand instruments and/or power instruments to maintain dental health and to address problems such as hooks, enamel points, wave mouth, step mouth, excessive tartar buildup, periodontal disease and wolf tooth extraction. The Powerfloat is a very thorough and quick way to do routine floats and to address malocclusions. For the safety of the horse and the operator, all horses undergoing a Powerfloat must be sedated. Some abnormalities, if severe enough may need to be addressed over several sessions that are 4-6 months apart due to concerns of damage from over heating or exposing the sensitive pulp of the tooth.

Laboratory Services

Foal IgG, fecal analysis, and semen evaluations are performed in our office. All other specimens are sent to a referral laboratory such as Antech Diagnostics, BET Reproductive Laboratories, Cornell University Laboratories, and the University of California. The turn around time, in most cases, is very quick.

Emergency Services

We are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day for our regular clients. If you are not a regular client, we will do what we can to try to accommodate you; however our regular clients have priority.

Digital Radiography

Digital radiology is at the forefront of veterinary imaging techniques which can be brought directly to the stable, track, or farm. Highly detailed radiographs (x-rays) can be obtained, examined, and read within a matter of seconds. Copies of the radiographs can be put directly on a CD which can be reviewed on virtually any computer. This allows for quick transfer of images to referral hospitals, farriers, or potential buyers. Digital radiographs can complete any lameness or pre-purchase examination. Measurements such as degree of rotation, toe length, and sole depth can be taken on the digital images allowing the veterinarian to work closely with your farrier to give your horse the best possible foot care. The quick and accurate radiographs will allow you to gain valuable information about your horse’s health directly on site, allowing you to make a more informed decision on the care being provided.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging allows the veterinarian to examine soft tissue structures such as tendons, ligaments, and reproductive organs. Sound waves are passed through the soft tissue and back to the transducer to allow for quick, harmless, and pain-free imaging of virtually any soft tissue structure. Reproductive ultrasounds can be performed per-rectum allowing visualization of ovarian structures, uterine activity, and fetal development. This can allow the veterinarian and owner to accurately time ovulation for insemination, and to track the developmental stages of pregnancy. Ultrasound examination of tendons allows for accurate examination of lesions within tendons and ligaments, and allows for accurate placement of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) directly into core lesions within tendons. Ultrasound examinations can be done on site providing the owner with valuable information needed concerning their horse’s health and reproductive status.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy provides visual examination of the upper airway from the nasal passage to the end of the trachea. This allows the veterinarian to assess and evaluate the upper-airway for conformational, infectious, neoplastic, traumatic, or neurologic abnormalities. Endoscopy can accompany any pre-purchase/sale examination giving the buyer information needed on the status of the horse’s upper airway. Lesions or abnormalities within the upper airway can hinder any performance horse’s ability to perform at competitive levels. An endoscopic examination can determine what the cause of abnormality is and what steps will need to be made to correct the underlying problem. Endoscopy can also provide visual examination of the guttural pouches, and flushing of the guttural pouches can be performed more accurately with the visual aid of an endoscope.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is used to treat virtually any musculoskeletal, lameness, or soft tissue disease. It provides both analgesic (reduced pain) and healing properties. The shockwave machine produces a wave or pulse that is "shot" through the body a certain depth to achieve the desired results. Shockwave therapy has been shown to provide analgesia, osteogenesis (production of bone), and neovascularization (increased blood flow). Shockwave therapy can be used on bowed tendons, fractured sesamoids, sesamoiditis, stress fractures, suspensory ligament desmitis, navicular disease, osteo-arthritis, and other conditions. The quick and relatively pain free procedure can be done on site.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is used to treat and increase the healing process in tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures. PRP is a component of whole blood. The blood can be drawn and filtered through a special filtration system on site. The PRP can then be extracted and placed directly into the lesion. Platelets contain a variety of growth factors known as cytokines. These cytokines stimulate cell division and migration on local cells increasing the production of new cells needed for repair of damaged tissue. Some methods of obtaining PRP require that the blood be sent to a lab, spun down, and sent back to the veterinarian. This takes valuable time and allows for destruction of many platelets. The on-site filtrations system allows us to obtain a highly concentrated PRP from the fresh whole blood with minimal to no damage to the platelets. This allows for a better PRP within a matter of minutes, and will help your horse to heal more quickly.

IRAP Therapy

IRAP (Interleukin 1 Receptor Antagonist Protein) is present naturally in the body. It is used to treat OA (osteoarthritis) in horses. IRAP has been shown to be effective in the treatment of OA where other intra-articular methods have not been successful. IRAP Therapy allows us to concentrate the antagonist protein toward Interleukin 1, which causes damage to the joint leading to discomfort and pain for your horse. IRAP therapy can allow your horse to remain pain free, increase the healing process of its joint, and give it a healthier joint for a longer period of time. Whole blood is drawn from the horse, incubated for 24 hours, and then spun down and processed. The IRAP is then drawn up and injected into the joint or joints of interest. Multiple doses of IRAP can be obtained from one blood draw and can be frozen for future use in the arthritic joint or joints.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy can be used to treat primary or secondary back and or neck pain. A tight, stiff, or sore back keeps your horse from performing at top level. Mesotherapy involves a technique of making multiple small injections subcutaneously which allows the muscle of the back to relax. Mesotherapy can accompany stifle and hock injections that have caused secondary pain within and along the back. It can help restore your horse to peak performance and allow for a comfortable ride for you and your horse.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, also known as "freeze firing" uses liquid nitrogen to pinpoint and freeze superficial to deeper soft tissue or bony structures without causing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It can be employed for analgesia and strengthening of certain structures or it can be used for destroying and removing unwanted masses such as skin tumors. This procedure can be used to destroy the "seed" which causes reoccuring sarcoids. Cryotherapy has also been used to treat "popped splints", curbs, and torn/damaged suspensories. The specialized cryotherapy gun allows us to target certain tissues achieving desired results with minimal to no damage to healthier surrounding tissues. One permanent side effect of using cryotherapy is that the hair usually turns white after being subjected to the extreme cold.
